Causes of Data Loss

Statistics shows that a good percentage of people lose data every day due to:

Hardware failure

Research shows that disk drives over a year old have high chances of failure. A person that has an external drive and a hard drive in their computer, for a period of 5 years is nearly guaranteed to have one die.

Device loss/ theft.

15% of households annually experience theft, according to the Bureau of Justice. While it may not be clearly stated what was stolen, when such a scenario occurs, things like computers, phones, and other expensive gadgets are a likely target. We have heard endless cases of laptop theft at the airports, in taxi cabs, coffee shops and at vacation destinations- just to mentioning a few. All these results to loss of an individual’s data which they may never be able to recover.

Viruses and ransomware

IT pros and other various surveys across the web show that virus and ransomware are also a kings to data loss. In fact, ransomware attacks rose 350% worldwide from 2016 to 2017 and it is still a very serious danger in the world of cybercrime, one with wide -reaching consequences.

Ransomware threatens to publish the victims’ data or block access to it until a sum of money is paid.

Virus on the other hand, can destroy/delete or corrupt your data e.g. those on specific applications such as all Excel files or word files. When you run an infected program, your computer also runs the attached virus instructions to replicate or to deliver its payload.

Other catastrophic disasters

Contrary to other causes of data loss, natural disaster are the most uncontrollable cause. i.e. flooding, earthquakes, fires and other calamities, all of these are out of our control. Though not very common, when they occur they result to loss of data.

Human Error

‘’Oops’’ this is the #2 most common cause of data loss (after hardware failure) according to data recovery specialist. Is the delete key too big on the keyboard? Blame it on that… but all of us have done it and wished there were an undo key that was just as big.

I believe you have worked with technology for some time and you understand the importance of keeping your data safe. Keeping your data on remote backup service can be easy and cost-effective way to do this.

Remote backup which is also called online backup is a service that offers users with a system for backing up, storage, and recovery of computer data files. The backed up data is used later to restore the data, in the case of a data loss occurrence.

This service allows you to keep your data files off-site. You can select specific folders or the entire machine to be backed up to a remote server at an off-site location.

Keeping a frequent backup of your data minimizes the risk of catastrophic data loss that occur as a result of hard drive failure, virus, human errors and other disasters.
